Differences Between Beta Cyclodextrin, Alpha Cyclodextrin, Gamma Cyclodextrin

Cyclodextrin is a product of cyclodextrin transglucosidase acting on starch, consisting of six or more glucose molecules α- 1,4-glycosidic linked cyclic oligosaccharides. Cyclodextrin can exist stably in strong alkaline solutions, and partially hydrolyze into glucose and non cyclic maltose in acidic solutions.

Alpha cyclodextrin molecules have small pores. can usually only encapsulate smaller guest molecules, such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, CO2, propane, and other gas molecules;

Gamma cyclodextrin has larger molecular pores, can encapsulate larger guest molecules, such as organic macrocyclic compounds, but generally speaking γ- The production cost of cyclodextrin is high, but it cannot be produced in large quantities in industry, which limits its application to a certain extent;

Beta-cyclodextrin molecular hole size of cyclodextrin is moderate, which can better encapsulate certain vitamins and small aromatic molecules. Its encapsulation range is wide, and its production cost is low. It is currently the only cyclodextrin product that can be produced in large quantities in industry. However β- The solubility of cyclodextrin in water limits its application range.

Under 25 ℃ conditions, 100ml of water ,solubility as below:

β-cyclodextrin is 1.85g; α-Cyclodextrin is 14.5g; γ-Cyclodextrin is 23.2g,

In order to expand the application range of cyclodextrin, Shandong Binzhou Zhiyuan Biotechnology has successfully developed hydroxypropyl beta cyclodextrin, hydroxypropyl alpha cyclodextrin, hydroxypropyl gamma cyclodextrin, sulfobutyl beta cyclodextrin sodium, etc. It has passed customer audits multiple times!
