HYDROXYPROPYL CHITOSAN: FROM THE LABORATORY TO A STAR MATERIA IN MULTIPLE FIELDS

HYDROXYPROPYL CHITOSAN: FROM THE LABORATORY TO A "STAR MATERIAL" IN MULTIPLE FIELDS

Recently, hydroxypropyl chitosan, a derivative of chitosan, has drawn extensive attention in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, and environmental protection due to its unique performance advantages. As a water-soluble material obtained through hydroxypropylation modification, hydroxypropyl chitosan not only retains the alkalinity and positive charge of chitosan but also significantly enhances its solubility, moisture retention, and biological activity by introducing hydroxypropyl groups, making it a "core engine" for innovative applications in multiple fields.

In the field of medicine, hydroxypropyl chitosan has demonstrated breakthrough achievements. The pharmaceutical excipient hydroxypropyl chitosan produced by Zhiyuan Bio in Binzhou, Shandong, completed the filing with the China National Medical Products Administration (CDE) by the end of 2024, marking that its quality and safety have reached domestic pharmaceutical standards. As a drug carrier, this material can control the slow release of drugs through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, prolonging the drug's efficacy time. For instance, the sustained-release microspheres formed by combining it with resveratrol have a cumulative release rate of 72% within 12 hours, and the bioavailability is more than five times that of the raw drug. Additionally, its self-healing hydrogel system performs exceptionally well in wound repair, can withstand high pressure, and promote vascular maturation, providing a new solution for the treatment of burns and chronic wounds.

The cosmetics industry has also witnessed a "moisturizing revolution" brought about by hydroxypropyl chitosan. The hydroxypropyl groups in its molecules can form a hydrating layer to lock in moisture, making it an effective moisturizer in lotions and creams, significantly increasing skin water content. More notably, its antibacterial properties can inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and reduce inflammatory responses, making it a core ingredient in anti-acne products.

In the field of environmental protection, the adsorption performance of hydroxypropyl chitosan has shone brightly. The adsorption capacity of its nanoparticles for heavy metal ions increases with the increase of the degree of substitution. It can efficiently remove pollutants such as nickel and copper in wastewater treatment and can be recycled. The cost is 60% lower than that of traditional adsorbents. With technological iteration, hydroxypropyl chitosan is moving from the laboratory to large-scale application, injecting new impetus into green manufacturing and sustainable development.
