The Composite Functionality Of Polyester Fabrics Using Hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin Inclusion With Tea Polyphenols

Polyester fabrics are widely utilized in various industries due to their durability, strength, and cost-effectiveness. However, their limited functional properties often require enhancement for specialized applications. One promising method for improving the functionality of polyester fabrics is through the incorporation of bioactive compounds. In this study, we explore the use of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) to encapsulate tea polyphenols and subsequently apply them to polyester fabrics. This approach aims to enhance the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-protection properties of the fabric.

Characterization of Treated Fabric

Antimicrobial Activity

The antimicrobial activity of the treated polyester fabric was evaluated using the agar diffusion method. The treated fabric demonstrated significant inhibitory effects against common bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This enhancement is attributed to the bioactive tea polyphenols encapsulated in HP-β-CD, which gradually release and exert their antimicrobial effects.

Antioxidant Properties

The antioxidant properties of the treated fabric were assessed using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The results indicated a marked increase in antioxidant activity for the treated fabric compared to the untreated control. The inclusion complex effectively preserved the antioxidant capabilities of tea polyphenols, providing prolonged protection against oxidative stress.

UV Protection

UV protection was evaluated by measuring the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of the fabric. The treated polyester fabric showed a substantial increase in UPF, offering better protection against harmful UV radiation. This improvement is likely due to the UV-absorbing properties of tea polyphenols.

Durability and Wash Fastness

The durability of the functional properties was tested through repeated washing cycles. The treated fabric retained significant antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-protection activities even after 20 washing cycles, indicating good wash fastness and durability of the HP-β-CD/tea polyphenol inclusion complex on the polyester fabric.

The study successfully demonstrated the enhancement of polyester fabric functionalities using HP-β-CD to encapsulate tea polyphenols. The treated fabric exhibited improved antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-protection properties, with good durability and wash fastness. This method offers a promising approach to developing high-performance polyester fabrics for various applications in healthcare, sportswear, and outdoor textiles.news-848-581
